Michael Praed was a fabulous Captain von Trapp, striking the right balance between stuffy reserve, moral resolve and affection. “He can sing Edelweiss to me anytime,” sighed a woman behind me.

As they blossom under Maria’s tutelage, no wonder their father, Captain von Trapp (Michael Praed, less explosive than the film’s Christopher Plummer, but still a force to be reckoned with), starts to fall for his new governess.

Fisher is a naive Maria, fresh and young, who plays the part sympathetically. She is matched by the tall handsome Michael Praed, as the stern Captain Von Trapp, a suave aristocratic widower with seven children. He has a fine singing voice and his acting is understated appropriate to his bearing.

Michael Praed is a commanding Captain von Trapp, and I particularly liked the transformation of Liesl (Claire Fishenden) from sulky teenager into insecure young woman. Martin Callaghan is a lively and roguish Max Detweiler, nicely complemented by Jacinta Mulcahy as Baroness Schraeder. The children are suitably enchanting, and even the minor characters emerge as real personalities rather than just being singing wallpaper.

Michael Praed (forever remembered for his roles in Robin of Sherwood and Dynasty on TV) cuts an imposing figure as the Captain, and Marilyn Hill Smith, as Mother Abbess, stops the show with her wonderfully operatic rendition of the inspirational ‘Climb Every Mountain’ .

In fact, it is in many ways a tough-edged tale, especially as concerns the principled (and dangerous) objection to his country’s takeover by the Nazis of the aristocratic Austrian Captain Georg von Trapp (Michael Praed). This certainly contrasts with the equivocal political expediency of music promoter (and the show’s comic relief) Max (Martin Callaghan) and von Trapp’s fiancée Baroness Shraeder (Jacinta Mulcahy). The break-off of her engagement is partly a consequence of this difference, but mainly of his developing love for Maria. The scene of their break-up is a masterpiece of stage economy from writers Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse.

Sleuth! Who’s Praeding as Von Trapp
May 7, 2009
Michael Praed will play Captain von Trapp to nun-turned-nanny Maria, played by Connie Fisher (pictured with Praed) in the new national tour of The Sound of Music, which arrives at the Sunderland Empire in November, where it is breaking box office records.
Best remembered from TV’s Robin of Sherwood and Dynasty, Praed’s West End musical credits include Aspects of Love, Contact and Beautiful and Damned.
Praed toured in the two handed Sleuth! last year, starring opposite Simon MacCorkindale, who joined the London Palladium production of the Sound of Music, also playing Captain von Trapp, once their tour had ended.
Also in the touring cast are Margaret Preece (reprising her West End performance as the Mother Abbess), Jacinta Mulcahy, Martin Callaghan, Claire Fishenden, Jeremy Taylor and, playing Maria at certain performances, Kirsty Malpass. This production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic, which finished its two-year West End run this past February, is directed by Jeremy Sams and designed by Robert Jones, with choreography by Arlene Phillips.

The Sound of Music: Milton Keynes Theatre
1:28pm Wednesday 4th November 2009
By Giles Woodforde »
Sniffily reviewed by many critics, the giant wide-screen film of The Sound of Music went on to become one of the biggest box-office hits of all time.
Much more recently, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s last musical hit the headlines again when Andrew Lloyd Webber decided to cast the principal role in his new London Palladium production of the show by staging a TV talent contest called How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?
The winner was Connie Fisher, who now returns to the production as it hits the road. And the first thing that strikes you when she floats the opening words, “The hills are alive with the sound of music,” into the air is how fresh she sounds. Goodness knows how many performances she has under her belt by now, but you really do feel that she is off to meet the von Trapp family for the very first time. As I Have Confidence and Do-Re-Mi follow, it’s possible to sense that she has studied Julie Andrews’s iconic film performance carefully, but there is an impishness about Connie Fisher’s Maria that is all her own – the whole production (director Jeremy Sams) is less treacly and sentimental than the film.
Instructed by the Mother Abbess (Margaret Preece, who delivers a roof-lifting Climb Ev’ry Mountain), postulant Maria leaves her convent to take up a position as governess to the seven von Trapp children. The children are as important to the show as Maria herself, and whoever is training them (presumably resident director Gavin Mitford) deserves the highest praise. With the exception of the two eldest (Tony Kemp and Claire Fishenden, both excellent), three rotating teams of children are used. On opening night they were superb, singing clearly and confidently, obviously well rehearsed, yet each displaying a sturdy individual character. As they blossom under Maria’s tutelage, no wonder their father, Captain von Trapp (Michael Praed, less explosive than the film’s Christopher Plummer, but still a force to be reckoned with), starts to fall for his new governess.
There are no obvious signs that the production has been pared back for touring, with lush scenery and costumes (designer Robert Jones) all present and correct. And, hurrah, for once the sound amplification is exemplary: every word clear over the lively band (musical director Jonathan Gill), and volume levels just right. The Sound of Music may not be the best thing Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote, but the capacity opening night Milton Keynes audience plainly loved this show, and so did I.
The Sound of Music continues at Milton Keynes Theatre until Saturday, November 14. Tickets 0844 871 7652 or online: (wwwambassadortickets.com/miltonkeynes)

DYNASTY WEDDING MASSACRE (1985)
One of the best-loved soap tragedies was the blood-soaked wedding of Amanda Carrington (Catherine Oxenberg) to Prince Michael of Moldavia (Michael Praed).
The fairytale, Charles and Di-style event was marred by the arrival of armed revolutionaries who attacked the wedding party, with only action man Dex Dexter to try to protect them.
It led to a season finale cliff hanger in which most of the distraught family were covered in blood. However, the following series opened with the discovery that all the main cast, minus two minor characters, had survived the assault.

Former Dynasty star Michael Praed may look the part of Captain von Trapp but he sometimes appears a little awkward on stage. However, he has a wonderful singing voice, particularly proved during Edelweiss.

How I'll spend the next 48 hours: Neil Moors
Aug 1 2009
by Karen Price, Western Mail
AFTER months of hype, Connie Fisher has finally stepped back into Maria’s habit and returned to the mountains of Austria – and it’s as if she’s never been away.
I’m part of the ensemble but I’m also first cover for the Butler and second cover for Captain von Trapp.
Today it’s a two-show day so I will head to the Wales Millennium Centre for 1.30pm to warm up. The first performance runs until around 5pm so then I’ll head to St David’s Hotel and Spa to spend some time in the gym before chilling out in the sauna and jacuzzi until around 6.30pm. Then it’s back to the theatre for the evening show.
Once we’ve finished, 10 of us are heading to Michael Praed’s (who plays Captain von Trapp) flat to play poker. We will all pay a fiver for the chips and then it’s winner takes all. Last time we played Michael won. Perhaps I’ll be luckier this time.
Tomorrow I will head into town for some lunch before going to the theatre at 2pm for a warm-up before the show starts at 3pm. I’m really enjoying it so far. For the opening nuns’ procession, all of the cast apart from the three main principals have to dress as nuns so there are a lot of habits about.
Once the show is over around 6pm I’m going to drive back to London, where I have a flat, to see some friends as we have a day off on Monday. It’s then back to Cardiff in time for curtain up again on Tuesday.
Neil Moors is in The Sound Of Music which runs at the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff, until August 29. The box office number is 0870 040 2000. For a review see page 31
