Since Anthony Shaffer’s Sleuth first appeared in 1970, its countless revivals and two film versions attest to its capacity to intrigue audiences. But will the much-hyped, though ultimately slightly disappointing 2007 film version overshadow this touring production? Michael Praed, the former Dynasty star feels that this latest version, a 70s-set production of Shaffer’s original, has the edge over the film. ‘In fairness, the remake set itself a monumental task in updating a classic play,’ he says. ‘By doing that, they had to change it a lot. People coming to see this version will see a very different show.’
The story of the young, entrepreneurial Milo visiting the country home of Andrew, an ageing novelist has, notoriously, more twists in the tail than a 40ft anaconda. The former’s affair with the latter’s wife is the starting point for a memorably brutal series of encounters. Praed maintains that it is the endless shifts in sympathy that create fascination for an audience. ‘What’s really interesting is the way power shifts. We start off sympathetic to Andrew, who, it seems, has been cuckolded by this younger man, but then his response to this is so nasty that we start to feel sorry for Milo. But after that Milo behaves so nastily that we switch back again. These are two men who really are out to settle scores in a nasty way. By their actions they are making a monumental gesture, saying: “You fucked with me, and you’re going to pay”.’

Case for court comedy proven
THE MURDER GAME
King’s Head Theatre
THERE are more innately hilarious places than a New Orleans criminal courthouse.
Nevertheless, James Farwell’s The Murder Game successfully transforms a Judge Judy set into something appropriately amusing.
Katherine Kelly (Josefina Gabrielle) is the unlucky Louisiana judge whose District Attorney husband (Michael Praed) has left her for “a blonde with big boom booms” named Zizzi. She also has a disgruntled defendant trying to kill her.
As she toys with the would-be killer’s disarmed bomb, she contemplates how she can get back at her husband without resorting to divorce – “I’m a Catholic after all”. A joking suggestion from her British confidante, Melvin (Patrick Clancy), leads to her hiring a hitman – not to kill her husband but to scare him. It’s just a shame Randall has had the same idea.
This delicious satire melds fiction with genuine legal principles. The doctrine of flagrant necessity called into play by Katherine “renders lawful an otherwise illegal act, as an assault to remove a man from impending danger”. In other words, a Louisiana judge is within her rights to contract a hitman for a job on her District Attorney.
At times, the production feels like a string of one-liners, with Katherine’s aphorisms on marriage and Melvin’s endless innuendoes. But video interludes add depth and context to the plot, and the dialogue is as quick and witty as it would be in the courtroom.
John Tillinger’s production has terrific performances, particularly from Gabrielle and
Praed. Gabrielle’s
judge looks like a Deep South Nigella and
argues like Hilary Clinton.
In his turn, Praed’s Bill Clinton-esque tones provide a fitting counterbalance.
Katherine’s crime-writing Brazilian lover, Pito (Ben Jones), “a passionate student of PD James”, provides many of the show’s real laugh-out-loud lines, and Emmerdale star Matt Healey is unrecognisable as the “tax-paying assassin” Clyde.
What motivates a man to murder is never answered, although Pito’s suggestion that murder is “just divorce – Brazilian style” goes some way towards it.
Katherine opens the play with the lines “taking a shot at a judge is a risky business”.
Happily, Farwell’s shot at a courthouse comedy hits the mark.

Michael Praed, Simon MacCorkindale take to the stage in Windsor
So where on earth has that Michael Praed been, anyway? Our own Prince Michael of Moldavia of "Dynasty" does have something new brewing. He's performing in the play "Sleuth" in Windsor, Ontario, later this month.
Praed's role is Milo Tindle, the lover of the main character's life (you may recall the movie version of "Sleuth" with Michael Caine in this role).
"TV opened a lot of doors for me," says Praed in the Bucks Free Press. "I really do look back on those years with fondness."
The play also stars Simon MacCorkindale (he's the guy at odds with Praed's character!), known to us "Dynasty" fans as Billy Dawson and us "Dukes of Hazzard" fans as Gaylord Duke in the episode "The Duke of Duke."
