Robin Hood for the 21st century? It's a bit like watching Sir Edmund Hillary as played by Jason Gunn.
Every age gets the Robin Hood it deserves. The archetypal people’s hero, forever robbing the rich to give to the poor, has brought his subversive message to the small screen at regular intervals since 1955.
Now we have Prime’s new Robin Hood. It stars Jonas Armstrong as a young scruff who looks more like an asbo (subject of an antisocial behaviour order) than a swashbuckling avenger of the oppressed. Some have dubbed the series “Robin Hoodie”.
This is a sub-genre that has been difficult to take seriously since Errol Flynn stuck a feather in his cap and cried, “Ho, varlets!” Though there will always be a soft spot in my heart for the original British television series, The Adventures of Robin Hood.
Robin was played with a commendably straight face, and just a suggestion of a double chin, by the suave Richard Greene. In those days, heroes were unthreatening types, like the dad in Leave It to Beaver but with tights.
For Greene’s Robin, living rough in Sherwood Forest was no excuse for slipshod grooming. He was always impeccably turned out in a white shirt and the jaunty green felt hat that lives on as tragic fancy-dress fodder to this day.
In those simpler times, sidekicks were recognisable comic types. Little John was big and slightly thick. Friar Tuck was fat and greedy, forever gnawing on the leg of some hapless woodland creature. The show was ahead of its time, with a Maid Marian who dressed like a bloke, in so far as any of the cast could be said to dress like blokes, and held her own in combat.
It was all done with a merry medieval “hey nonny nonny”. It seems that outlaws were a jolly bunch back in the 12th century. As the show’s mercilessly unforgettable theme song reassured us, “They handled all the trouble on the English country scene; And still found plenty of time to sing!”
Possibly fooled by all that yodelling gaiety, US audiences embraced this British import. Which is ironic, considering the series employed the talents of American expats, including Ring Lardner Jr, who had been blacklisted as a result of Senator Joe McCarthy’s witch-hunt of supposed Commie sympathisers.
By the 80s, Robin had morphed as the times demanded into a long-haired, sensitive new age guy, played by pretty boy Michael Praed. Robin of Sherwood benefited from the likes of Nickolas Grace (chewing the scenery in the approved manner as the Sheriff of Nottingham) and Ray Winstone.
The galloping rhyme scheme of the original theme song was replaced by the sedative Celtic stylings of Clannad. There was the mystic figure Herne the Hunter, and much enigmatic dialogue.

Praed went on to star in Dynasty, where he played Prince Michael of Moldavia in a storyline so absurd, even by Dynasty standards, that it could only be resolved by massacring most of the cast.
The BBC Robin Hood currently on our screens shows no signs of pagan rites or other metaphysical nonsense. In fact, disappointingly, Friar Tuck seems to have been expunged from this series, possibly for fear of fuelling the obesity epidemic by presenting an overly spheric cleric.
It also remains to be seen whether the new, ironic, smirking Robin will cut it. So far, it’s a bit like watching Sir Edmund Hillary as played by Jason Gunn. There are other signs of updating. Little John is no longer a big lug but a loving husband and father. Maid Marian is, inevitably, a bit of a ball-buster.
Robin (fresh back from the Crusades): Marian, it’s me!
Marian: Congratulations.
He’s not easily put off. “Your eyes … You can see into my soul,” he says, smirking seductively. “Still peddling the same old drivel,” barks Marian.
Never mind. There’s always Much, Robin’s devoted, Samwise Gamgee-like, possibly slightly gay right-hand man. And Robin, if weedy, is capable of some astonishing feats with a longbow, calling to mind everything from Lord of the Rings to Kung Fu Hustle. He would be able to take on vast legions of bad guys, if only the budget ran to more than a handful. It’s a wonder the Sheriff doesn’t just hand over the key to Nottingham right now and save everyone a lot of bother.
Happily, the Sheriff is played by Keith Allen, the rogue gynaecologist from Bodies. Crushing his pet birds in his bare hands, having peasants’ tongues cut out and laughing evilly – “Mwa-ha-ha-ha!” – he appears to be going for the Tim Curry Prize for industrial-strength overacting.
It’s all very silly. But the old political resonances are still there, only with the inevitable post 9/11 twist. There is much talk of fighting a distant war while things go to hell at home. “Is it our war or Pope Gregory’s?” demands Robin. “We stand shoulder to shoulder with Rome,” replies a bad guy. “And fall, too,” says Robin. By the second episode there’s talk of civil liberties being sacrificed, suspects being held without trial, etc.
But just as you get absorbed in picking the not terribly subtle references to the Blair-era zeitgeist, Prime decides to enhance the moment by running a competition invitation across the bottom of the screen: “Become a Robin Hood bounty hunter and you could win an Outlaw Weekend for four at Mt Ruapehu.”
A Robin Hood weekend at a ski resort? Perhaps there’s an episode coming up in which Robin and his lads snowboard the Sheriff’s men into submission. It would make about as much sense as anything else in this strangely enjoyable load of medieval cobblers.

Здесь сопоставляют самые разные воплощения персонажей на экране, по принципу "а кого вы представляете, когда слышите слова "Робин Гуд" или, например, "монах Тук", и так далее". Упоминаются и те актёры, которые воплощали всяких разных в RoS.

Who’s your favourite Robin?
Russell Crowe is the Man. Him working with Ridley Scott has got to be a winner, as they brought us Gladiator. Kevin Costner was a travesty! Michael Praed in the eighties - that was very much a New Age Robin Hood and really served its purpose. But the man you’ve got to take your hat off to is Errol Flynn - there aren’t many men that can carry this character off in green tights…
